About the museum
Nesasjøhuset is the head office of Ryfylkemuseet and lies in Nordenden on the seaside town of Sand in Suldal, along the National Tourist Route Ryfylke. The boathouse was built in the good herring years around 1850. Here nets and boats were stored and herring was salted. Later the building was used as a cooperage and for various storage purposes.
Ryfylkemuseet moved into the house in 1991. The building has housed exhibitions, a museum shop, a café and a range of events throughout the year. On the ground floor there is a museum shop with local history literature, local crafts, toys and honey, and the café has a view over Sand and the fjord. On the first and second floors there have been both changing and permanent exhibitions, among them the interactive children's exhibition Kvitebjørnen, which is based on a story by the author Rasmus Løland.
In the summer season the jekt (traditional sailing boat) “Brødrene af Sand” lies off the museum when she is not on a trip. From 1 September 2026 Nesasjøhuset is closed for conversion, and a new exhibition opens in summer 2027.
