About the museum

Kautokeino bygdetun (Kautokeino Rural Museum), in Sámi Guovdageainnu gilišillju, lies by the riverbank in the centre of Kautokeino and is part of RiddoDuottarMuseat. The museum grounds have been cultivated land since the beginning of the 18th century and were a school site from 1883 to 1959.

Outdoors stands the farmstead (tunet), a reconstructed environment from Guovdageaidnu as it was about a hundred years ago. It has several protected buildings, turf huts and structures from reindeer herding and outlying settlements. The museum building was opened in 1987, and the exhibition hall is decorated by the Sámi artist Trygve Lund Guttormsen.

The basic exhibition consists of objects from the local Sámi culture. Here stands the “Kirke-hytten 1650” (the Church Hut 1650), a reconstructed log hut displayed indoors, which is regarded as Finnmark’s oldest standing building. The hut was built by the Swedish crown under Carl IX and originally stood where the museum grounds lie today. The exhibition also shows duodji, fishing equipment from traditional inland fishing, an exhibition of historical sources and models made by Lars Jacobsen Hætta.
