About the museum
The Järämä fortification area is part of the Sturmbock-Stellung (Sturmbock position) built by the Germans in 1944 in Käsivarsi. The position was part of a larger whole intended to protect the ports of the Arctic Ocean. Construction began in early August 1944; the workforce comprised German construction pioneers, civilian builders of the Organisation Todt and prisoners of war, and the workforce may have risen to as many as three thousand men. The fortification area was mostly blasted into the rock. After the armistice between Finland and the Soviet Union the Lapland War began, but no actual battles were fought at the position: the Germans left it at the beginning of January 1945.
The restored area has 1,209 running metres of combat, connecting and crawl trenches, ten restored or rebuilt weapon emplacements and five shelters, two of which are steel-element shelters and three timber shelters. The other timber shelters in the area have been left in their present state for comparison.
The museum building houses the permanent exhibition Sota-aika Tunturi-Lapissa (Wartime in Fell Lapland), and the area also has a café and a museum shop. The site is run by Enontekiö municipality.
