About the museum

Kolbeinstveit lies between Preikestolen and Trolltunga, right by riksvei 13 (National Tourist Route), about two kilometres past Suldalsosen. The main buildings of the farmyard, the stove house (stovehuset) and the barn (låven), were erected around 1850, and the farm was moved in the 19th century from its original location at Gamlatveit. In the summer season it is a living museum farm with animals and hosts who welcome visitors.

In the middle of the farmyard stands Guggedalsloftet, which originally comes from Bråtveit in Suldal. The upper part is dated to 1281 and the lower part to around 1340, and it is the oldest preserved timber building in Rogaland. The turf roof has for now been replaced by corrugated iron to save the building. The permanent exhibition “Garden og folka” (The farm and the people) tells about the people who have lived on the farm and how they used the houses and resources.

In the farmyard there are old toys, hay to jump in, old-fashioned clothes for dressing up, and animals on the farm. Guided tours, a market day, concerts and activity days are held, and children can try building log houses. Kolbeinstveit is run by Ryfylkemuseet.
