About the museum
Røynevarden is a husmannsplass (smallholding) just above Suldalsvatnet, with a view towards Bråtveit and the Suldalsheiane. As a husmannsplass the settlement can be dated back to around 1805. The site originally belonged to the farm Overskeid by Nesflaten, became an independent smallholding in 1915 and was abandoned in 1946. Since 1947 the buildings have been part of Ryfylkemuseet, and all of them are protected.
There are six buildings on the site: two dwelling houses (stuehus), a barn (låve), a sheep house, a goat house and an eldhus (cooking house). The oldest room, the røykstua or rotastua as it is called in Suldal, probably dates from the 1820s, and people lived there until 1893. Although everything may seem small, the site was among the best in Suldal: there one could keep two cows, five goats and some sheep, grow potatoes and grain on the many small fields, and mow and gather hay on the slopes and heaths.
Ryfylkemuseet has carried out extensive restoration work on the buildings. In 2013 a reconstruction of the barn was completed, and the cowshed has been reconstructed from photographs and traces in the ground. The work on the barn was an important learning project for the museum’s craftspeople, who copied the materials from the old barn and used traditional knowledge. At one end of the barn is a simple exhibition about the farm and the people who lived there.
