About the museum
The zinc mines at Allmannajuvet in Sauda were in operation from 1881 to 1899. During these years about 12,000 tonnes of zinc ore were extracted in total. The mining gave life to the district, with up to 168 employees and the export of ore by ship abroad, and it was a forerunner of the later hydropower development and industrialisation of Sauda. Today the mining area is a museum.
As part of the National Tourist Route Ryfylke, the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has designed new buildings in the gorge. The site consists of an exhibition gallery showing the history of the mines, a café and service building, parking, paths and steps. The simple buildings are designed in an industrial style to tell the story of the mines. To reach the entrance to the mine, a spectacular road was built along the river.
In the summer season a guided tour runs every day along the mine road, past the buildings and into the lower mine. Participants are given a helmet and a lantern, and the tour takes about an hour and a half.
