About the museum
Myllarheimen is the smallholding where the fiddler Torgeir Augundson, known as Myllarguten, lived in the last part of his life. He was born in 1801 in Sauherad and was given his nickname after his father, who was a miller. As a young man he became a sought-after fiddler at parties and markets. In 1831 he met Ole Bull in Bergen, and a concert together in Kristiania in 1849 was a success.
At the end of the 1850s his popularity declined, and Myllarguten settled in Vest-Telemark. Around 1866 he moved to the smallholding Kosi, where he died poor and alone on 21 November 1872. After his death the smallholding fell into disrepair, and the original farmhouse living room was torn down around 1900.
Rauland historielag (local history society), led by Øystein Kostveit, bought the land and the remaining buildings together with the municipality. As the original living room could not be used, a similar living room from Glosimot in Bjålidmarki was moved here. Volunteers carried out the restoration, and Myllarheimen opened on 8 July 1951 with around 2000 spectators. A memorial by the sculptor Dyre Vaa was unveiled on 24 August 1969.
