About the museum
In August 1976 some pieces of wood were dug up on the shore of the island of Lovund in Lurøy municipality. The pieces were remains of an old clinker-built boat, and the find aroused great interest on the island. A local interest group had a new building for the boat erected, designed by Valrygg studio. The Arctic University Museum of Norway (Norges arktiske universitetsmuseum) and the Norwegian Maritime Museum (Norsk Maritimt Museum) carried out the archaeological work over eight years.
At the centre of the exhibition, mounted in a boat cradle, stand parts of the boat from around 1460. It was found at Hamnholmen and is the only medieval boat found and preserved in the region. It is also the only medieval boat exhibited in a museum in Norway. Other finds from the excavation include textile remains, leather remains and biological material such as feathers, seeds and bones. The exhibition was designed by the architects Yran and Dahle.
Lovundbåten museum opened on 8–9 June 2024 and is run by Helgeland Museum. Next to the museum lies the Kystkultursenteret (Coastal Culture Centre), which has free admission and, among other things, a cinema hall.
