About the museum
Strømsør fjellgård (mountain farm) lies in Østerdalen in Bardu, at 275–300 metres above sea level on a south-west-facing slope between the Barduelva river and Veslfjellet. The farm from 1839 is the only surviving mountain farm in Troms and is protected by the Riksantikvaren (Directorate for Cultural Heritage). Midt-Troms Museum runs it.
The buildings are log-built, weathered grey and roofed with turf. They were built and extended over time, mostly by the farm's own people. The main house is a two-storey timber house built in three stages, the first two before 1886. The matbu (food store) is a small single-storey timber house partly set into the ground to keep food cold. The smithy has a stone chimney and a hearth, and nails and fittings were probably forged by hand here. The stabbur (storehouse) was moved here from Sørreisa in 1992. The working building is a long two-storey building with a cowshed, a sheep shed and a stable, most of it from the 1800s; the sheep shed was rebuilt in 1992.
