About the museum
Bygdemuseet Leikvin, also called Sunndal bygdemuseum, lies at Grøa between two of the world's highest waterfalls and is part of Leikvin kulturminnepark (Leikvin Cultural Heritage Park). The main exhibition is about the British salmon lords who came to Nordmøre between 1850 and 1950, and in particular about Barbara Arbuthnott, whose dramatic life has become legendary in the valley. Other parts of Sunndal's history are told in separate exhibitions.
The museum is an open-air museum with several buildings of different ages. Some have authentic interiors, while others have indoor exhibitions. The collection of several thousand objects relates largely to the old farming society, but also to the salmon lords. There are also exhibitions on the Second World War, bunad and folk costume, hunting and trapping, and archaeology.
The rest of the cultural heritage park can be explored on your own: Phillipshagen is a British landscape garden that Etelbert Lort-Phillips laid out around his house, the burial ground at Løykja is one of the country's largest from the Iron Age, and the churchyard at Løykja holds the graves of Barbara Arbuthnott and several other central figures in her story. The museum also has some buildings elsewhere in the municipality, such as Stamphuset at Litj-Fale and Frørenseriet at Smestad.
