About the museum
Bøfjorden sjøbruksmuseum is a rural museum at Bøfjorden in Surnadal. Since it started in 1995 it has had open Sundays in summer, from June to September, every year, and in 2025 it had been open on around 470 Sundays. The collections deal with maritime industry (sjøbruk) and local history on Nordmøre.
The exhibitions contain photographs and objects from shipbuilding, shipping, fishing and other local culture. Every Sunday there is coffee, small sales and “Dagens tema” (Topic of the Day), for example a talk (kåseri), a demonstration or a performance based on local culture and history. The museum has become a meeting place for both local people and visitors.
Bøfjorden historielag (the Bøfjorden local history society) owns and runs the museum on a voluntary basis (dugnad), without fixed public grants. Operations depend on income from coffee and small sales and on an annual lottery.
