About the museum
The Mission Museum was established in 2004 on the initiative of Fr. Andrzej Halemba, a missionary who worked in Zambia for more than ten years. It was opened by Bishop Stefan Cichy. The museum operates at the parish of Our Lady of Sorrows in Mysłowice-Brzęczkowice and is named after Cardinal August Hlond, who came from this village.
The museum is housed in the Oratory of St Adalbert (Oratorium św. Wojciecha), in the crypt of the church. The collection includes exhibits from three continents: from Africa (Zaire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Cameroon), Oceania (Papua New Guinea) and South America (Peru, Argentina).
The display cases show costumes, ornaments, masks, musical instruments and everyday objects. A separate section presents the fauna and flora of Africa, and photographs and films complete the display. The founder of the museum wanted children to be able to see another continent and learn about another culture.
