About the museum
The Centrum Dowodzenia Twierdza Przemyśl is a modern venue devoted to the history of the fortress, which at the beginning of the 20th century was one of the largest fortifications in modern Europe. During the First World War it became the scene of bloody fighting, and its capture on 22 March 1915 was compared with the siege of Verdun. Today the Przemyśl Fortress is a monument of history, recognised in 2018, and the forts of the outer ring survive as picturesque ruins.
The centre was officially opened on 19 September 2024. Its exhibition consists of ten interactive elements designed to bring the history of the fortress and the First World War closer to pupils and adults. The exhibition “Przemyskie szlaki wojny: I i II wojna światowa w broni i militariach” (Przemyśl Paths of War: the First and Second World Wars in weapons and militaria) is also shown here. From time to time there are temporary exhibitions, including drawings by Josef Lada, and a small gallery of paintings with angels.
The facility is adapted for people with disabilities, and in a regional competition it took third place in the category of institutions open to blind people. The centre hosts history lessons, workshops, holiday camps and cultural events.
