About the museum
The Muzeum Dzwonów i Fajek (Museum of Bells and Pipes) is a branch of the Muzeum Narodowe Ziemi Przemyskiej (Przemyśl Land National Museum) and is housed in the Wieża Zegarowa (Clock Tower) on ul. Władycza. The tower has stood in the panorama of Przemyśl since 1777; it was built as the bell tower of a planned Greek Catholic cathedral, which was never completed, and served this function until 1785. Today it also serves as a viewpoint.
The building has belonged to the museum since 1983. In 1984 the Muzeum Odlewnictwa Dzwonów (Museum of Bell Founding) was set up there, and in September 2001 the present Muzeum Dzwonów i Fajek was opened. The institution presents two crafts that developed in Przemyśl from the 19th century: bell founding and pipe making. According to the museum, it is the first and, to this day, the only institution of its kind in Poland.
The layout of the permanent exhibition follows the interior of the tower. The pipe displays are arranged around the shaft, in which historic bells hang. The first exhibitions were designed by Urszula Olbromska (pipes), Marta Trojanowska (bells) and the stage designer Walery Bortiakow.
