About the museum
The museum was established in 1909 on the initiative of the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk w Przemyślu (Society of Friends of Learning in Przemyśl) and was solemnly opened on 10 April 1910. Its collection was based on the private collections of the brothers Kazimierz Maria and Tadeusz Osiński, supplemented by gifts from residents and purchases. In 1921 the institution was given the name Muzeum Narodowe Ziemi Przemyskiej (National Museum of the Przemyśl Land). Before the Second World War the collections numbered more than 20,000 exhibits.
After the war, in 1946, the museum received as its seat the former palace of the Greek Catholic bishops on Plac Czackiego; in 1949 it was nationalised. In the following decades it changed its name and status, and in 1984 its historic name was restored. After the main building was returned to the church authorities, a new seat was built at Plac Berka Joselewicza 1. Construction began in 2005, and the museum has operated in the new building since 2008.
The museum currently holds collections in the fields of archaeology, ethnography, history, art, crafts and natural history, and its library has more than 36,000 volumes. The main building shows, among others, exhibitions on the prehistory of the region, on the Jews of Przemyśl, on the Przemyśl Fortress and on the fate of the city during the Second World War. The museum has two branches: the Muzeum Dzwonów i Fajek (Museum of Bells and Pipes, since 2001) and the Muzeum Historii Miasta Przemyśla (Museum of the History of the City of Przemyśl, since 2005).
