About the museum
The Muzeum Historii Miasta Przemyśla (Przemyśl City History Museum) is a branch of the Muzeum Narodowe Ziemi Przemyskiej (National Museum of the Przemyśl Land). It is housed in the Kamienica Brzykowska at 9 Rynek and in the townhouse at 7 ul. Serbańska, which is joined to it. The oldest references to the townhouse come from the town books of the early 16th century, when it belonged to Mikołaj and Anna Karwat. It owes its name to the Brzyk family, and especially to the merchant Jan Brzyk, who gave it its Renaissance character, with an arcade and an attic.
In later centuries the building changed owners. At the beginning of the 20th century it belonged to the Bystrzycki family, who renovated it and built the neighbouring house at ul. Serbańska; on the ground floor there were shops and a bookshop. After the war the townhouse was taken over by the State Treasury, and in the 1990s both townhouses became the property of the museum. After renovation the museum opened here on 23 May 2005.
The exhibition rooms hold more than two thousand exhibits relating to the history of the town. In the representative Great Chamber (Wielka Izba) you can see a reconstructed Baroque stove and remains of 16th-century polychromy. On the first floor there are burgher interiors from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and a former photographic studio, and higher up an exhibition devoted to the work of the Przemyśl artist Marian Stroński. From the museum one can also walk to the Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna (Underground Tourist Route).
