About the museum
The Muzeum Archidiecezjalne in Przemyśl was established in 1902 on the initiative of Bishop Józef Sebastian Pelczar, who wanted to protect the sacred art of the diocese from destruction. The official opening took place on 27 August 1908; the first collections were housed in the former Jesuit oratory above the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In 1991 the institution was given the name of its founder.
In 2007–2008, with European Union funds, the former Cathedral School from the sixteenth century was renovated, and the museum moved there exactly one hundred years after its first opening. The neighbouring tenement house known as the Psałterzówka, from the seventeenth century, was later added to the premises. In 2011 a new exhibition wing, called the ryzalit (projecting bay), was opened.
The collections consist mainly of medieval panel painting and sculpture, icons from the Podkarpacie and Łemkowszczyzna regions, early modern paintings, portraits, graphic art, textiles and liturgical objects. A separate section is devoted to mementos of St John Paul II and to the founder. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, meetings and cultural events.
