About the museum

The veneration of John Sarkander began to develop in Silesia and Moravia after his martyr’s death in 1620, and by the 18th century it was already well established in his native Skoczów. The accounts of Komoniecki from the 17th century point to a townhouse on the Market Square, directly adjacent to the town hall, as the birthplace. Between the wars a chapel was set up on the ground floor, and Catholic organisations, a library and a reading room were housed in the building.

After the Second World War the veneration in this place was suspended, but in 1959 the small cellar room again began to serve as a chapel. In autumn 1993, with the help of the town authorities, renovation of the interiors began. In June 1994 Bishop Tadeusz Rakoczy blessed the renovated chapel, and in November 1994 the exhibition rooms were opened. The owner of the townhouse since 1890 has been the parish of Saints Peter and Paul.

The permanent exhibition presents the life and veneration of St John Sarkander in Skoczów and Moravia. The sacred objects on display come mainly from the surrounding churches, including the parish church in Skoczów and the church of St Bartholomew in Grodziec Śląski; they include old prints, paintings and sculptures. The last room serves temporary exhibitions of painting, graphics, sculpture, photography and textiles.
