About the museum

The Muzeum im. Gustawa Morcinka (Gustaw Morcinek Museum) in Skoczów is a branch of the Muzeum Śląska Cieszyńskiego (Museum of Cieszyn Silesia) in Cieszyn. It is housed in a historic townhouse from the 18th century and was opened to visitors on 20 December 1986. The biographical exhibition devoted to the writer was previously in his former home and was moved to its present seat in 1982.

The exhibition covers three themes. On the ground floor are rooms devoted to Gustaw Morcinek, his links with Silesia and mining, and the writer’s study. On the first floor the crafts of Cieszyn Silesia are presented, including tanning, pottery, instrument-making, gunsmithing, goldsmithing and watchmaking. The collections on the prehistory of Skoczów and its surroundings, from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages, come partly from the collection of the mineralogist and ethnographer Karol Prause.

The museum took part in preparing two hiking trails in Skoczów, the Szlak Morcinkowski (Morcinek Trail) and the Szlak Sarkandrowski (Sarkander Trail), and it also took patronage over the Muzeum Jana Sarkandra w Skoczowie (Jan Sarkander Museum in Skoczów).
