About the museum

The museum is housed in the former presbytery from 1822–1824, a single-storey building in the eclectic style that served the parish priests of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Jeżowe until the 1980s. When Father Ludwik Bielawski built a new presbytery, the old building was assigned to museum purposes.

The collection began in 1948 with a carved figure of Christ the Man of Sorrows, which Father Bielawski received from a resident of Albigowa. In the following decades the collection grew rapidly, and its creator called it the Parish Room of Religious Art. In his will he expressed the wish that the room should become a cultural institution of the commune of Jeżowe. The former presbytery was entered in the register of monuments in 2009, and after modernisation with EU funds the museum was officially opened on 30 May 2011.

In 2023 a further 270 or so exhibits from Father Bielawski's collection were made available to visitors, the institution adopted its current name, and on 17 September 2023 it received his name. The museum is run by the Stowarzyszenie Muzeum Chrystusa Frasobliwego w Jeżowem (Association of the Museum of Christ the Man of Sorrows in Jeżowe). It presents nearly a thousand exhibits from all over Poland and abroad, mainly wooden sculptures of Christ the Man of Sorrows, but also images of the Holy Family, the Virgin Mary, the Stations of the Cross, Pietàs, reliefs, icons and paintings. The oldest object on show dates from the mid-18th century, and the newest was made in 2025.
