About the museum
The European Centre of Remembrance and Reconciliation was founded in 2009 as a unit of the Centre for Culture and Libraries of the Gmina Dębica. It commemorates the victims of German crimes during the Second World War – Poles, Roma, Jews and members of other nations – and educates young people. In 2011 the centre was named after Helena z Reyów, Princess Jabłonowska, who helped prisoners of the camps in Pustkowie.
The Historical-Educational Exhibition at Góra Śmierci in Paszczyna opened in 2012 on the site of the former German Waffen-SS training ground “Truppenübungsplatz Heidelager” in Pustkowie. It shows the history of the German forced labour camps and the training ground against the background of the history of the Dębica district in the years 1940–1944. According to the centre’s website, nearly 15 thousand people died in the camps from exhaustion, executions and shootings, and their ashes rest on Góra Śmierci.
The exhibition is housed in reconstructed buildings: the guardhouse, watchtowers, barbed-wire fencing, and the soldiers’ and prisoners’ barracks, where permanent exhibitions are set up. Visitors see original fittings, hundreds of documents and objects, models of the main buildings of the training ground and the camps, art installations and multimedia presentations, including “Historia mówiona” (Oral History).
