About the museum
The museum in Kolbuszowa opened on 26 April 1959 as a regional museum, founded on the initiative of the Towarzystwo Opieki nad Zabytkami Przyrody i Kultury im. J.M. Goslara (Society for the Care of Nature and Cultural Monuments named after J.M. Goslar). Its first seat was the former synagogue building, and the core of the ethnographic collections came from the exhibition “Sztuka ludowa Lasowiaków” (Folk Art of the Lasowiacy). In 1972 the institution was nationalised, and two years later it was given the name Muzeum Kultury Ludowej (Museum of Folk Culture).
In 1974 the first buildings of the future ethnographic park began to be set up at ul. Wolska, and the park was opened on 4 May 1978. Over time the open-air museum became the town’s main tourist attraction. It covers around 30 hectares, with about a hundred wooden buildings; former road surfaces, footbridges and crops have also been recreated.
The open-air museum presents villages from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, where the Lasowiacy from the former Puszcza Sandomierska (Sandomierz Forest) lived, and the Rzeszowiacy from the fertile lands around Rzeszów and Łańcut. In the entrance area stands a manor house from Sędziszów Małopolski, which houses the ticket offices, a small shop and a café. The museum also runs a rich educational and workshop programme and carries out field research and publishing.
