About the museum

The initiative to create an iron ore mining museum emerged in the early 1960s among mining activists and former employees of the Iron Ore Mining Association (Zjednoczenie Kopalnictwa Rud Żelaza). From January 1966 the institution operated formally as a branch of the District Museum in Częstochowa. The underground corridors between the exhibition pavilions in Staszic Park were dug in 1974–1976, and the museum was first opened to visitors on 4 December 1989.

The exhibition was renovated and solemnly reopened on 15 May 2008. The scenario was prepared by engineer Tadeusz Loster from the Museum of Coal Mining in Zabrze, and the artistic design by Bożena Mazur; the work was carried out together with the Senior Circle of the Association of Mining Engineers and Technicians (Stowarzyszenie Inżynierów i Techników Górnictwa) and the Naczelna Organizacja Techniczna in Częstochowa. The aim was to save the centuries-old tradition of ore mining in the Częstochowa region.

The exhibition “Dzieje górnictwa rud żelaza” (“History of Iron Ore Mining”) is a model of the most characteristic underground workings at natural scale. The exhibits come from the mines of the region, among them “Rudniki”, “Wręczyca” and “Barbara”, and most come from the “Szczekaczka” mine in Brzeziny. The site is on the Silesian Voivodeship Route of Technical Monuments.
