About the museum

The Częstochowa diocese was established in 1925, and its first bishop, Father Teodor Kubina, was a patron of the arts who gathered works with a view to a future museum. After his death the collections were scattered over various places: the curia, the church of St Barbara, the halls of the former Pauline monastery and one of the towers of the cathedral. Plans to build a museum next to the cathedral at ul. Ogrodowa came to nothing because of financing problems.

The opportunity to create a museum arose after the seminary complex at ul. św. Barbary 41 had been built during the time of Archbishop Stanisław Nowak, and exhibition rooms were set up in its basement. The museum opened in 1997–1998 and was blessed by Archbishop Nowak; it bears the name of Bishop Kubina and is housed in the building of the Higher Seminary (Wyższe Seminarium Duchowne).

The collections include monuments of sacred art from Częstochowa and the surrounding area: sculptures, including a Madonna and Child from around 1430, paintings, liturgical vessels, vestments, reliquaries, early printed books, and coins and medals. The museum also shows exhibitions of contemporary religious art, including paintings from the collection of Prelate Bronisław Preder, and runs classes for schools.
