About the museum
The Regional Museum in Zwoleń was established in the 1970s on the initiative of local activists and scholars from the Lublin university UMCS (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University). From the outset its aim has been to preserve the memory of people and places connected with the cultural heritage of Zwoleń and the Zwoleń region. The museum draws both on the rich and turbulent history of the Zwoleń land and on the fact that the poet Jan Kochanowski and his relatives lived and worked in the area (Sycyna, Czarnolas, Zwoleń).
The museum building stands by the church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which houses the Necropolis of the Kochanowski family. All the exhibition rooms are on the ground floor. The collections include finds from archaeology, history, ethnology and art, from Neolithic finds by the Zwolenka river, through documents on the history of the town from the 17th–20th centuries, photographs, textiles and everyday objects, to sacred monuments and a collection of sculptures by the folk artist Wincenty Flak (1870–1943) from Zielonka Nowa.
The museum also carries out research and publishing activity and offers a wide educational programme: workshops, museum lessons, lectures and talks. The permanent exhibitions present, among other things, the sacred monuments of the Zwoleń parish, including gifts from the Kochanowski family, and the work of Wincenty Flak. Admission to the exhibitions is free on certain days.
