About the museum

The origins of museum work in Kozienice go back to the time of the palace, which was built in 1776–1778 for King Stanisław August Poniatowski to a design by Franciszek Placidi. The palace held rich art collections and a library, but it was looted during the Kościuszko Insurrection. In the 1930s two rooms with folk art from the Kozienice Forest were set up in the former palace, but the collections and the palace burned down in September 1939.

The tradition of the museum was continued in 1970, when the Society of Friends of the Kozienice Land (Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Kozienickiej) set up a social museum institution. Today the Regional Museum is an institution of the town and commune self-government of Kozienice. It is housed in the surviving left side wing of the palace, whose present look in the French Renaissance style was given by Franciszek Arveuf during the reconstruction in 1896–1900.

The collections comprise historical, ethnographic, archaeological and art departments, as well as a library. The ethnographic collection is especially interesting: it contains old tools, sets of workshop equipment for rope-making and cooperage, beehives and objects connected with forest beekeeping in the Kozienice Forest, as well as works by local folk sculptors, including Leon Kudła. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, lessons and workshops.
