About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Starym Sączu was established in 1956 on the initiative of the Society of Friends of Stary Sącz (Towarzystwo Miłośników Starego Sącza), which still runs it. Until 1976 it operated as a Regional Room (Izba Regionalna), after which it received museum status and the name of the ethnographer Seweryn Udziela. It is housed in a 17th-century burgher's townhouse called Dom na Dołkach on the market square, where the Museum of Father Józef Tischner has also operated since 2004.
The permanent exhibition occupies seven rooms and consists of several parts. The exhibition “History and Culture of Stary Sącz” presents about eight centuries of the town's history, which is linked to St Kinga, sacred art, the culture of the Lachy Sądeckie (Sącz Lachs) and memorabilia of Pope John Paul II's visit in 1997. The exhibition “Treasures Unearthed from the Earth” (Skarby z ziemi wydobyte) shows the oldest traces of human presence in the Sącz region, discovered during archaeological work.
A separate exhibition introduces the life and career of Ada Sari, an opera singer who lived in Stary Sącz from the age of three. On the upper floor is the exhibition “Father Józef Tischner: Life and Thought”, which displays a recreated room from the philosopher's family home, his personal objects, documents and photographs, as well as recordings of sermons and a biographical film.
