About the museum

The Main Building (Gmach Główny) of the Muzeum Ziemi Sądeckiej – the institution previously known as the Muzeum Okręgowe w Nowym Sączu (Nowy Sącz District Museum) – is located at Jagiellońska Street 56, in the former building of the Austro-Hungarian Bank, built in 1912 to a design by the Kraków architect Teodor Hoffmann. It has been the museum’s main seat since 2018; after a thorough modernisation in 2017, the representative character of the staircase and the main hall on the top floor was emphasised.

The exhibition space occupies the first floor. The representative hall is used for temporary exhibitions, meetings and concerts. On either side is the permanent historical exhibition on the history of Nowy Sącz from 1867 to 1945, covering the period of Galician autonomy, the wars and the interwar years, as well as a display of a painter’s studio with paintings by the Nowy Sącz painter Bolesław Barbacki. The first floor also has an education room, and the whole area can be reached by lift.

The Main Building is one of several branches of the Muzeum Ziemi Sądeckiej, which also include the Maria Ritter Gallery, the Sądecki Park Etnograficzny (Sądecki Ethnographic Park), the Galician Town (Miasteczko Galicyjskie) and branches in Krynica-Zdrój, Szlachtowa and Podegrodzie. The lower floors house workshops, offices, the ticket office and collection stores.
