About the museum
Bolestraszyce was the family seat for centuries. In the 15th century the Świętopełk family built a wooden fortalice here, which in the 16th century was replaced by a brick fortified manor house. In the 19th century the castle was dismantled, and a single-storey wing took over the role of the manor. In 1846 the painter Piotr Michałowski settled there; he ran the estate and created his paintings here, among them the famous “Seńka”.
After 1944 the manor housed a primary school and the farm buildings a machine station. In 1975 the ruined complex was taken over by the Zakład Fizjografii i Arboretum (Physiography Station and Arboretum) of the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk w Przemyślu (Society of Friends of Science in Przemyśl). The manor and the farm buildings were restored, and an arboretum was laid out around them, which in time also came to include Fort XIIIb of the former Przemyśl Fortress and a branch in Cisowa.
On the ground floor of the manor is the Muzeum Przyrodnicze (Natural History Museum). The permanent exhibition “Chrońmy ptaki” (Let's Protect Birds) presents native breeding birds, their habitats and ways of protecting them. A collection of beetles is also on show. By prior arrangement, visitors can view collections of moths from the Przemyśl Foothills, cones, wood sections, fossils, fruits and seeds, as well as photography and drawing exhibitions devoted to trees.
