About the museum

Fort XII “Werner” in Żurawica near Przemyśl is one of the best-preserved works of the Przemyśl Fortress. The fortress was one of the largest in the world during the First World War and held out longer than any other – for 179 days, until its food supplies ran out. The main artillery fort of the IV northern sector of the defences was incorporated into the defensive ring in 1883. It was built in 1882–1886 as a single-rampart artillery fort, standing alone without auxiliary forts. It takes its name from Antoni Werner, the first commandant of the fortress, and its garrison comprised 6 officers and 310 soldiers.

The main armament was artillery on the rampart, divided by traverses with shelters for the gun crews. In the courtyard stand the barracks, with sleeping quarters, a kitchen, food stores and casemates for the officers and the commandant; behind them are the ammunition stores and the infirmary. An underground postern leads from the axis of the fort to a caponier in the moat. The caponier itself has been destroyed, but the passage is accessible to visitors. The brick-walled moat has survived intact, and the whole site covers 8.5 ha.

Today the fort serves as a museum with an exhibition and a venue for events, including historical re-enactments. Commemorative events, meetings and training sessions are held in the casemates.
