About the museum
The Civil Defence Command Shelter (Schron Kierowania Obroną Cywilną) is located beneath the building of Primary School No. 14 in Przemyśl. It was built in 1966 together with the school, as part of the campaign “1000 Schools for the Millennium of the Polish State”, as a consequence of the Cold War and the threats connected with it. Until recently it was a strictly secret facility.
The shelter has an area of about 178 m² and includes technical rooms as well as workplaces and rest areas for the crew. It has its own power source, a hydrophore-pump unit, a filter-ventilation unit and an emergency exit with an underground evacuation tunnel. At the time when Przemyśl was a voivodeship city, reports from the surrounding communes were to arrive here, and decisions on a possible evacuation of the region were to be taken.
In 2016 the facility was opened to visitors thanks to members of the Przemyśl Historical Re-enactment Association “X D.O.K.” (Przemyskie Stowarzyszenie Rekonstrukcji Historycznej “X D.O.K.”). They recreated the wired and radio communication networks and the social and storage equipment, and the collections are supplemented by souvenirs from the PRL period connected with civil defence and the Warsaw Pact, dosimeters, gas masks and uniforms. The visit is enhanced by sound, images and 3D technology.
