About the museum
The palace in Otwock Wielki was built by Kazimierz Ludwik Bieliński and Ludwika Maria Morsztynówna on the occasion of their wedding. Set apart from the noise of the town, it was the summer residence of the couple, visited not only by aristocrats but also by King John III Sobieski and Augustus II the Strong. Kazimierz's son, Franciszek Bieliński, greatly extended the complex with two annexes, and in the mid-18th century stables and farm buildings were erected.
After the death of Franciszek Bieliński in 1809 the residence's period of splendour came to an end. In the 19th century the estate often changed owners, and the palace, damaged by wars, became a destination for sightseeing trips as a “romantic ruin”. After the Second World War a general renovation was carried out, but the plan to set up a cultural centre here was not implemented. In the People's Republic period the palace housed a correctional institution for girls, later the residence of the Office of the Council of Ministers, and in the 1980s Lech Wałęsa was interned here. Until 2004 the building was managed successively by the Chancellery of the President, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Culture.
The palace is now a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw and is open to everyone. Visitors see furniture and furnishings of the salons from the Baroque to the Biedermeier, old musical instruments, and the permanent exhibition “Dar Paderewskiego” (“The Paderewski Gift”), opened on 26 April 2024. The complex includes a park on an island in Lake Rokola and a café; a comprehensive renovation of the building is also planned within the FEnIKS project.
