About the museum
The museum is located in the single-storey brick former rectory of the parish of St Vitus, standing in a garden opposite the Baroque church. The building served the parish priests until 1996, when the parish moved into a new house and the abandoned residence began to decay.
In 2006, under an agreement between the parish and the city authorities, the Historical Centre of the Karczew Land (Centrum Historyczne Ziemi Karczewskiej) was opened here. The institution gathers memorabilia, documents and everyday objects connected with the history of Karczew and the surrounding villages, and it is run by the municipal cultural centre.
The exhibition occupies five rooms: four show permanent displays, and the fifth serves temporary exhibitions. Visitors can see a traditional Karczew room with old furniture and equipment, the parish priests' study with documents and photographs of the parish, rooms devoted to the history of the town, and the room of Michał Elwiro Andriolli, an artist and illustrator and creator of the świdermajer style. The museum also organises museum lessons, meetings and workshops.
