About the museum
The idea of establishing a museum in Otwock first emerged in 1935 at the “Otwockie Sosny” (Otwock Pines), but it took almost sixty years to realise it. The first visitors toured the museum from 3 May 1994. Three renovated rooms in the basement of the town hall became the museum's first seat, and its first curator was Jan Tabencki.
In 1996 the collections were moved to the villa at ul. Narutowicza 2 on the edge of Soplicowo. The building was constructed in 1954–1956 for Jakub Berman; later it housed, among other things, a children's hospital. All the exhibits are donations or deposits from residents, and the collections number several thousand objects, from relics of the Świder culture to objects from the 20th century.
The permanent exhibition leads from prehistory, through the history of Otwock as a summer resort and spa town, to modern times. Separate sections are devoted to the Jewish community, the świdermajer style, the folk culture of the Kołbiel region and the museum's patron, Michał Elwiro Andriolli. The building also houses the Bogdan Stodulny Art Gallery. The museum is currently closed to visitors because of renovation work.
