About the museum
The palace in Śmiełów was built in 1797 for Andrzej Gorzeński to a design by Stanisław Zawadzki, an outstanding architect of Polish Classicism. The building has a horseshoe plan, Ionic porticoes and arcaded galleries. Its interiors are decorated with stucco by Michał Ceptowski and paintings by the Smuglewicz brothers. The palace stands in the picturesque Szwajcaria Żerkowska (Żerków Switzerland), and a landscape park of about 14 hectares surrounds it from the north and east.
In August 1831, during the November Uprising, Adam Mickiewicz lived here for several weeks. After the Gorzeński line died out, Franciszek Chełkowski bought the estate in 1887, and his family ran an open house here for people of culture and politics until the outbreak of war. In 1939 the Germans seized the estate, and after 1945 the palace was looted, divided into flats and for some time housed a school.
The National Museum in Poznań took over the palace in 1970, renovated it and in 1975 opened a Mickiewicz museum here. The collections include paintings, sculptures, prints and objects associated with the poet. Separate rooms are devoted to “Pan Tadeusz” and “Dziady” (Forefathers’ Eve), to Mickiewicz’s relations with Henryk Sienkiewicz, and to Józef and Maria Chełkowski. The visit also includes the park with Zosia’s Garden and the poet’s monument.
