About the museum
The museum in Pyzdry was established in 1957 and was initially housed in a rented historic arcaded house from the 18th century. In 1985 it was moved to the buildings of the former Franciscan monastery, one of the three surviving examples of early medieval Franciscan architecture in Greater Poland. In 1989 the town self-government took over supervision of the museum, and in 1997 an exhibition of late medieval and Baroque frescoes was opened in the monastery’s cloisters.
The collections number more than 4,000 exhibits. The exhibition is preceded by a display on prehistoric animals, with mammoth bones, a woolly rhinoceros and the skull of a musk ox from about 35,000 years ago. The part devoted to the history of the town shows, among other things, parchment guild charters, the oldest of which dates from 1531, a model of the royal castle, cannonballs, a replica of a 14th-century bombard, and memorabilia of the Battle of Pyzdry of 1863. Separate collections cover ethnography and the history of the Pyzdry convent.
Since 2018 the museum has also run an exhibition in the arcaded house on the market square, which houses an information point and an exhibition on the Szlak Piastowski (Piast Trail). The institution organises pottery workshops and outdoor events.
