About the museum

The Beskid Museum in Wisła opened on 16 August 1964 during the first Beskid Culture Week. Its initiator and organiser was the social activist and publicist Andrzej Podżorski, whose name the museum still bears. The institution is a branch of the Museum of Cieszyn Silesia in Cieszyn.

It is housed in the brick building of a former Evangelical inn from 1827, built on the site of a wooden inn from 1794. Worshippers travelling to services from distant valleys and slopes used to stop at the inn. The building was entered in the register of monuments on 2 March 1960.

The collections cover objects related to the life and culture of the highlanders of the Silesian Beskids: everyday tools, furniture, costumes and folk art. The exhibition recreates the interior of a highlander's hut and also shows herding, weaving, carpentry and blacksmithing. A separate collection consists of paintings connected with the region, including works by Czesław Kuryatta, Ludwik Konarzewski, Jan Wałach and Paweł Steller. Next to the museum is the Wooden Architecture Enclave, opened in 2010.
