About the museum

The founder received the core of the Muzeum Bursztynu w Jarosławcu collection in 2008 from his grandfather and father, who had bought amber back from local collectors for nearly twenty years. That is why a large part of the exhibits are lumps found on the beach or fished out in Jarosławiec and the surrounding area. From 2008 the collection was expanded with valuable inclusions and specimens from other parts of the world.

The idea of establishing a museum emerged in 2011–2012, and the first exhibitions were opened in 2014 at ul. Nadmorska. From the outset the museum was well received, and after a few years it became one of the most visited attractions in the region. Ticket revenue made it possible to buy further specimens of Baltic amber and other fossil resins.

When the collections no longer fitted into about 250 m² of exhibition space, a decision on a major extension was taken in 2021. In July 2023 an agreement was signed with the Nizio Design International studio for the concept of the new exhibitions; visitors are ultimately to have almost 1,000 m² of exhibition space. Today the museum presents narrative, stage-design exhibitions on the formation of amber in a forest 42 million years ago, on its extraction, and on inclusions.

Highlights

  • Exhibition “Las bursztynowy” (Amber Forest) – a walk into the interior of a giant tree and a journey to an ancient forest
  • Exhibition “Kopalnia bursztynu” (Amber Mine) with lumps weighing over 3.2 kg
  • Exhibition “Inkluzje” (Inclusions) with insects and plants trapped in amber
  • Sieving of the spoil – visitors take home the amber lumps they find

  • Kopalnia bursztynu – Exhibition on the deposits and extraction of amber, with original spoil, tools, large lumps and a sieving station.
