About the museum
Swołowo lies about 14 km north-west of Słupsk, at some distance from the 18th-century Słupsk–Darłowo road, which is why it has kept its original village layout. It is a medieval oval village (owalnica) laid out along the Zielona Struga stream, with a pond in the village centre and a church from around 1400. The earliest mention of the village dates from 1230, when the Duke of Sławno granted it to the Knights Hospitaller; later it belonged to Pomeranian noble families and then to the royal administration in Słupsk.
In the 19th century the village grew: in 1851 it had 31 houses and 236 inhabitants, and in 1885 it had 66 houses and 499 inhabitants. In March 1945 Soviet troops entered without destroying the buildings, and in August 1945 Polish authorities took over the administration.
Today the museum, a branch of the Museum of Central Pomerania in Słupsk, presents the life of the former village in several farmsteads and outbuildings. The tour begins in farmstead no. 15, where the ticket office is, and covers three farmsteads and two buildings; it takes about three hours. Permanent exhibitions are shown in farmsteads nos. 8, 14, 15, 26 and 39A, among others.
