About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Usteckiej was established on the initiative of the Society of Friends of Ustka (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Ustki), a non-governmental organisation founded in 1993. After an exhibition for the fiftieth anniversary of the town, held in 1995 at the Baltic Art Gallery (Bałtycka Galeria Sztuki), it became clear that the growing collections of regional memorabilia needed a seat of their own, and that the town needed to revive its identity and traditions.
In May 1996 construction began on the museum in the form of a replica of an 18th-century half-timbered building. The investment was financed from donations, support from local companies and authorities, and the Polish-German Foundation (Fundacja Polsko-Niemiecka). Members of the society, residents and pupils of a technical school worked on the construction on a voluntary basis. The museum opened on 27 June 2000.
The collections include exhibits and photographs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as post-war documents, including historic washing machines, post-German photographic equipment, typewriters and sewing machines, a century-old skate and a bathing costume from the early 20th century. The museum has the largest collection of models of vessels built by the Ustka Shipyard (Stocznia “Ustka”), and the largest collection of paintings and sculptures by Michał Stroiński, a local artist and teacher.
