About the museum

The first museum in Słupsk opened in 1924. After the Second World War, Poles reopened it in 1948, taking over more than 600 objects from the pre-war Heimatmuseum. From 1964, the District Museum, led by art historian Janusz Przewoźny, began building a collection of works by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz – Witkacy – which today is the largest in the world.

The museum is based in a complex of historic buildings in the town centre. The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes has served as a museum since 1965, and the Mill Castle since 1968. The newest part is the White Granary, opened in 2019, where works by Witkacy, contemporary art and an exhibition on post-war Słupsk are shown; in 2025 the neighbouring Red Granary, with education rooms and a library, was opened.

The collections exceed 30 thousand objects. They include items related to the history of Pomerania, older art, relics of the last Griffin dukes, applied arts including the silver altar from Darłowo from the 17th century, coins, historic cutlery, contemporary art and ethnographic collections. The museum also includes two open-air museums: in Kluki and in Swołowo.
