About the museum
The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes in Darłowo dates from the 14th century and for centuries was associated with the rulers of Pomerania. In the 20th century attempts were made to restore its former splendour: in 1929–1935 a renovation was carried out to adapt the building for use as a museum. The first exhibition opened on 1 July 1930. The activity of the Muzeum Powiatowe (District Museum) dates from that day; it was established mainly thanks to the passion of Karl Rosenow, the museum’s first director.
The castle was not destroyed during the Second World War and admitted visitors until March 1945. As early as 1 July 1945 the Muzeum Regionalne (Regional Museum) was opened here. In 1971–1988 a major renovation and restoration of the building was carried out, aimed at preserving the form of the castle and the layout of its interiors from the early 17th century and at displaying its Gothic architectural elements. After the works were completed, the castle reopened to visitors on 22 October 1988.
The museum now collects objects relating to interior furnishings, applied arts, Pomeranian ethnography, sacred art and Eastern art. In the former knights’ hall, known as the castle chapel, Pomeranian sacred art of the Sławno Land (ziemia sławieńska) is displayed, and in other rooms there are, among others, folk art, the map of Pomerania by Eilhard Lubinus and Baroque and Neo-Baroque furniture.
