About the museum
The Muzeum Diecezjalne in Płock was founded in 1903 by Fr Antoni Julian Nowowiejski, later Bishop of Płock; it was the first museum of this kind in the Kingdom of Poland. The building was designed by Stefan Szyller. The first director was Fr Tomasz Kowalewski, and the collections were expanded in 1929–1930. Since 2009 the institution has borne the name of Blessed Archbishop Antoni Julian Nowowiejski.
The collection grew out of objects from the cathedral in Płock and from private gifts. It is still enlarged by historic or artistically valuable church objects that are no longer used in worship. The most important holdings include manuscripts and documents, medieval sculpture from Mazovia, goldwork, a collection of kontusz sashes and liturgical vestments, and painting.
In June 2008 the museum opened a new section in the former Benedictine abbey. Its treasury contains, among other things, a herm of St Sigismund and chalices belonging to Prince Konrad I and Karol Ferdynand Waza. The exhibition in the abbey is divided into three parts: Christ in Art, Christ in the Eucharist and Christ in the Lives of the Saints. In the older building, known as the Old Museum, archaeology, manuscripts, furniture and kontusz sashes are shown, among other things. Conservation work was carried out in the Old Museum in 2023.
