About the museum
The museum was founded in 1978 by the ethnographer Prof. Jacek Olędzki, who chose as its patron Stanisław Murzynowski, the translator of the first Polish New Testament and a figure associated with the area. The museum is housed in a wooden thatched hut from the early twentieth century, in which a river ferryman and his family once lived. The building survived demolition during the construction of the Włocławek reservoir.
After the death of the museum’s guardian in 2010, the institution faced closure. It was reopened in 2016 thanks to the Urząd Gminy Brudzeń Duży and the Wydział Geografii i Studiów Regionalnych of the University of Warsaw, and the exhibition was rebuilt and the house thoroughly renovated. The museum is run by the Mazowiecki Ośrodek Geograficzny of the University of Warsaw.
The exhibition deals with local history and ethnography, especially the work connected with the river: fishing, rafting and shipping, as well as wickerwork, fruit growing, agriculture and religious practices. Visitors can see, among other things, fishing baskets, nets, anchors, a sail, felt boots for walking on ice and archaeological finds from a bell-grave cemetery. Most of the exhibits are gifts from residents to Professor Olędzki, dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The fenced grounds also contain a lapidarium with old gravestones from nearby cemeteries.
