About the museum
The Muzeum Mazowieckie in Płock traces its origins to a museum founded in 1821 by the Towarzystwo Naukowe Płockie (Płock Scientific Society) as the Muzeum Publiczne i Szkolne Województwa Płockiego (Public and School Museum of the Płock Voivodeship); the institution is regarded as the oldest museum in Poland. The collections were shown in a school building, today the Liceum im. Małachowskiego, and at the end of the 1830s the museum was closed. After the society resumed its activity in 1907, a townhouse at Rynek Kanoniczy was bought, and the public exhibition opened there in 1912 marked the museum’s second birth. In 1928 it was renamed Muzeum Mazowsza Płockiego.
The German occupation brought heavy losses. After the war the collections were put in order and a new exhibition opened on 1 December 1945; in 1949 the museum was nationalised, and in 1963 it received its present name. In 1968 its profile was extended to Art Nouveau – the 1967 exhibition was the first museum presentation of Art Nouveau in Poland. In 1973 the museum opened in the Castle of the Dukes of Mazovia, and in 2004 it moved to the townhouse at ul. Tumska 8; the exhibition of Art Nouveau and Młoda Polska opened there in July 2005.
Today the main branch at ul. Tumska 8 comprises the Art Nouveau townhouse, with interiors of a middle-class home from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the adjoining new building with the exhibition “X wieków Płocka”. The museum also runs branches: Art Déco at ul. Kolegialna 6, Spichlerz, the Museum of Mazovian Jews, the Muzeum Wisły in Wyszogród and the Skansen Osadnictwa Nadwiślańskiego in Wiączemin Polski.
