About the museum
The Włocławek History Museum (Muzeum Historii Włocławka) opened in 1972 as a branch of the Museum of the Kuyavian and Dobrzyń Land (Muzeum Ziemi Kujawskiej i Dobrzyńskiej). Its seat is a complex of three historic townhouses at the junction of the Old Market Square (Stary Rynek) and ul. Szpichlerna. Two of them, at Stary Rynek 14 and 15, were built around the middle of the 18th century and are among the few surviving examples of Baroque burgher townhouses in Włocławek.
In 2013, because of the very poor condition of the buildings, the museum was closed for a thorough renovation. The roofs and windows were replaced, the cellars and foundations were protected against water, the façades were renovated and the courtyard was developed. A further stage of modernisation, co-financed from EU funds, included an extension with a lecture and exhibition hall, a reception foyer, cloakrooms and sanitary facilities adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.
The present permanent exhibition presents the history of Włocławek and the region from prehistory to the PRL period in nine chronological spaces: from the prehistory of Kuyavia and the beginnings of Civitas Vladislavia, through the time of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów) and the industrial development of the town in the 19th century, to the Second World War and the years of communism. Most of the exhibits are directly connected with the history of Włocławek, and the exhibition is accompanied by reconstructions of panoramas of the town based on scientific research.
