About the museum
The Museum of the Kuyavia and Dobrzyń Land is one of the oldest museums in Poland. It was established by the Kuyavian Branch of the Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze (Polish Regional Society) by resolution of 2 June 1908, and the solemn opening as the Muzeum Kujawskie took place on 14 March 1909. It has borne its present name since 1975.
The building at ul. Słowackiego 1a was erected in 1925–1930 to a design by the town architect Stefan Narębski, largely from social contributions, and was opened on 7 December 1930. Until 1972 it was the museum’s only seat. Today it houses the directorate and administration, the Department of Faience and two permanent exhibitions.
The exhibition “Fajans włocławski” (Włocławek Faience) shows 432 items from the former Włocławek factories from all periods of production (faience was made in Włocławek for almost 120 years) and all decorating techniques. The “Galeria portretu polskiego” (Gallery of the Polish Portrait), opened in 2009, presents paintings from the beginning of the 19th century to the mid-20th century, from Classicism to Colourism, including works by Jacek Malczewski, Józef Mehoffer, Leon Wyczółkowski and Olga Boznańska.
