About the museum
The Muzeum Męczeństwa bł. ks. Jerzego Popiełuszki operates in the undercroft of the sanctuary at ul. Płocka 167A in Włocławek, near the dam on the Vistula, at the site associated with the abduction and death of the priest in 1984. It was created within the project “Szlak Męczeństwa bł. ks. Jerzego Popiełuszki” (Trail of the Martyrdom of Blessed Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko) and was solemnly opened on 7 June 2015. After renovation it was reopened to visitors on 2 July 2025.
The sanctuary and the museum are looked after by the Zgromadzenie Braci Pocieszycieli z Getsemani (Congregation of the Brothers of Consolation of Gethsemane). The entrance to the museum is from the side of the ZUS building.
The exhibition has three thematic rooms. The first presents the childhood and youth of Fr Jerzy: the seminary, military service and the beginnings of his priesthood. The second shows the time of his activity within “Solidarity”: strikes, Masses for the Homeland and persecution by the communist authorities. The third, interactive room documents the abduction, the death and the veneration after the martyrdom; it contains multimedia maps and stations with archive materials. In the first rooms a panoramic film, reconstructions and 3D photographs are used.
