About the museum
The Art Collections of the Kuyavian and Dobrzyń Land Museum (Zbiory Sztuki Muzeum Ziemi Kujawskiej i Dobrzyńskiej) are housed in a historic granary at ul. Zamczej 10/12, built in 1839. In 1981 the building was handed over to the museum, and in 1988 the conservation and adaptation works for exhibition and storage purposes were completed; at the same time an administrative section was added. The building was opened to the public in 1989.
The branch presents selected works from the museum's collections and also hosts temporary exhibitions, which are usually on the second floor. The permanent exhibition “Kuyavian Gallery of Polish Art of the 19th and Early 20th Centuries” (Kujawska Galeria Sztuki Polskiej XIX i początku XX wieku) leads through the currents and styles of that period. Alongside paintings, watercolours, pastels and drawings by Seweryn Mielżyński, Juliusz and Jerzy Kossak, January Suchodolski, Jacek Malczewski and Leon Wyczółkowski, works by artists associated with Włocławek and Kuyavia are shown, among them Stanisław Noakowski and Leon Płoszay.
The second permanent exhibition is devoted to Stanisław Zagajewski (1927–2008), an artist from the circle of art brut who has been associated with Włocławek since 1963. It shows a selection from his collection of ceramic sculptures, which the museum has been collecting since 1966: so-called altars (ołtarze), free-standing sculptures and masks from 1964–1990, as well as films with the artist.
