About the museum
The museum was founded by Fr Józef Jarzębowski, a Marian and collector. Its beginnings go back to 1925, when at the Marian school in Warsaw’s Bielany he began to gather memorabilia of Polish history, especially from the Kościuszko, November and January Uprisings. After the outbreak of the Second World War the collections were dispersed, and after 1950 Jarzębowski founded a museum and library at Fawley Court on the Thames near London, which was called “Bielany on the Thames” (Bielanami nad Tamizą).
The museum was opened to the public in 1982. After the school was closed in 1986 the collections were reorganised, and in 2006 the order decided to move the collection to Poland. The collections arrived in Licheń in 2007, and on 2 July 2010 the museum was opened to visitors and named after Fr Józef Jarzębowski.
The museum occupies the second and third floors of the basilica in Licheń Stary and has modern exhibition spaces of about 1,000 m². The collection holds several thousand exhibits on Polish history, culture, national heritage and sacred art. The permanent exhibitions trace the path from the Noble Republic (Rzeczpospolita szlachecka) through the 19th century to the 20th century.
